Starshines receives its name from a song by band 311. The song is about the ultimate come up,
and rising and thriving despite the odds being against you. No better metaphor fits the concept,
as Starshine’s was begun just mere months before Covid 2020.
The concept began as a family endeavor, January 2020, with Chefs baking and selling
macarons out of their home, filling every table in their downstairs with trays and trays of
macarons while their children helped assemble them. They sold them locally and via mail, and Chef
Bryan would take a wagonful of macarons packaged for delivery to the post office every week.
Eventually, they began looking for a commissary space (a shared kitchen, where multiple
business scheduled times to work and use the facilities). Unable to find one local or affordable,
Chef Bryan happened to be driving past the square one day when he passed the 13 Hampton
street property with a for lease sign. He immediately called the landlord and inquired about the
space and signed a lease. The day after receiving the keys, the COVID lockdown was announced.
Throughout the lockdown, the business worked hard, adapting and offering curbside orders for
different breads, pastries and specialty items even though they were unable to open for service.
Finally, after much careful research and planning, they opened their dining room for the first time in June 2020!
Slowly over time, a dining and beverage program evolved bit by bit, piece by piece. A brunch
menu was launched and expanded. Pastry items were set, new items rotated in and out. Private
dining events, pairing dinners and eventually a dinner menu was added.
Throughout the most volatile time in modern history for the hospitality industry, Starshines grew and re-branded on the
corner of the square as an upscale casual restaurant, patio and bar. The core values of adaptability, positivity, being solution oriented, a love of food and creating unforgettable experiences for everyone, staff and guests alike, drove them to
navigate this difficult time and grow their company into a concept which they hope will foster a culture of more diverse and vibrant businesses within our community.
What this means to us...
Times are tough and life can be stressful, especially in the service industry. This is why it's so important to take the time to appreciate the life we're living and remember why we do what we do.
We would like to thank Murphy Kelly for her significant contributions to the development of our training materials, cocktail menu and overall implemention of all aspects of front of house operations during our rebranding and for writing the beautifully articulated words on our History. Your commitment, support and friendship have meant so much to us and your spirit will forever be infused into the culture of Starshines.
To our children,
You are the true OGs of Starshines. You have been there to help us build this company from the ground up and it wouldn't be the same without your involvement and sacrifices. You are the hardest workers we know. We love you and are so excited to see what your futures hold both in and outside of Starshines.
To our Team,
Thank you all for believing in us and for your dedication to upholding our standards. To those currently with us and those who have come and gone, you ALL have contributed to the growth and success of Starshines and we are grateful.
To our Guests,
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for the warm reception and show of support from the beginning. It has been a truly magical experience becoming a part of this community and we will be forever grateful.
